Climate Action Awareness Report 2022: US consumers expect transparency in corporate climate action and rely on labels

December 8, 2022

The 2022 ClimatePartner consumer awareness survey, which included over 1,000 respondents from the United States, shows that after a clear and transparent explanation, consumers understand the concept of carbon emissions and offsetting. They also recognize and correctly interpret climate-friendly labels and use them as guidance for their purchasing decisions. Moreover, consumers expect companies to be transparent and communicate climate action clearly.

Transparent and trackable climate action is essential for US consumers

76% of respondents in the US believe that companies should take responsibility to help protect the climate. In addition, transparent and trackable communication of a company’s climate action measures is essential to consumers. Among those who choose sustainable products, 60% consider it important to have transparency and to be able to track the company’s climate action and environmental initiatives. 38% of respondents actively look out for products that are climate friendly when shopping. This is where a label can be a valuable asset for informing consumers about a product’s carbon footprint and the measures that reduce, avoid, and offset emissions.
