A clear goal in sight: deuter’s climate action journey

deuter’s climate action journey

Whether on the summit or in everyday life, outdoor enthusiasts have trusted deuter for over 125 years. With its backpacks, sleeping bags, and outdoor gear, the company stands not only for functionality and durability, but also social responsibility and sustainability.

Climate action has long been an integral part of deuter’s corporate philosophy. The company is committed to minimising the environmental impact of its products and has documented this in its Promise Report. To drive climate action forward in a measurable way, deuter partners with ClimatePartner.

Calculating and reducing carbon emissions

For an international company like deuter, sustainability is a challenging task. It’s not just about making products more sustainable but also about reducing the company’s overall carbon footprint. So, how can emissions within global supply chains be measured and reduced?

In collaboration with ClimatePartner, deuter calculated the carbon emissions of its operations and all its products. These carbon footprints form the foundation of all climate action efforts. Particularly noteworthy is the exceptional quality and availability of deuter’s consumption data, a result of its strong and long-standing relationships with suppliers. One example is deuter’s partnership with Duke, its exclusive backpack manufacturer in Vietnam, which has spanned over two generations since 1991.

Based on the calculated carbon footprints, deuter is implementing concrete measures to reduce emissions at both the corporate and product levels:

  • Transitioning to green electricity and implementing energy efficiency measures such as LED lighting
  • Involving decision-makers in climate action activities
  • Incentivising employees to use low-emission transport, such as public transport and JobRad (bike-leasing program)
  • Using transport modes like sea and rail as energy-efficient inbound logistics
  • Optimising product design and material use, including recycled materials and packaging
  • Extending product life through maintenance, repair services, and spare parts

Making an impact: Financing renewable energy in Asia

Deuter places great importance on transforming the energy sector from fossil fuels to sustainable energy sources. The company supports two climate projects in the amount of remaining emissions: a wind energy project in Nong Wang, Thailand, and a geothermal energy project in Darajat, Indonesia. These initiatives reduce carbon emissions, expand sustainable energy infrastructure, strengthen local economies, and improve the quality of life for communities in these regions.

Clear goals for the future

Since 2023, deuter has been ClimatePartner-certified for its Gersthofen headquarters and for selected backpacks, sleeping bags, and outdoor gear. By 2025, all deuter products will carry the ClimatePartner certification. But that’s not all: with science-based targets, deuter aims to reduce its emissions by 42% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050.

"Through our collaboration with ClimatePartner, we achieved a precise and comprehensive calculation of our total emissions. This detailed understanding forms the foundation of our reduction strategy. Together, we can develop targeted measures to significantly reduce our carbon footprint."
