Prodigy plant-based chocolate: becoming better and healthier for the planet

October 27, 2021

The UK-based plant-based chocolate brand Prodigy Snacks sees itself as the “premium, better-for-you choice” when it comes to climate-conscious and nutrition-aware chocolate delight. This goes beyond the chocolate, as it also considers the packaging of the chocolate bars.

Therefore, Prodigy gained plastic-negative certification through their partnership with rePurpose Global. Complementing the holistic approach, the carbon footprint and the respective carbon emissions are also a priority of the company’s sustainability strategy. We at ClimatePartner are delighted to support Prodigy in this regard. We bring in our expertise to help Prodigy measure, reduce and offset their emissions. As a result of this process, Prodigy is entitled to proudly use our label “climate neutral” on its chocolate bars, giving consumers transparent information about the product´s carbon emissions and how these are managed and offset.

A key element of offsetting unavoidable emissions is to work with certified, high-quality carbon offset projects, adhering to strict standards and with traceable impact. We were very happy to consult and guide Prodigy through our range of available projects, resulting in a project selected that is located where cacao, one of Prodigy’s core ingredients, originates from: a forest protection project in Madre de Dios, Peru.

Customers can obtain details of the carbon offset project  by accessing the specific tracking page which is shown on the ClimatePartner label. The inclusion of that label is part of a major overhaul of Prodigy’s product packaging as part of the company’s sustainability strategy. Not only does it display the climate-neutral status, but it also gives a fresh new look for its plastic-free packaging and communicates the significantly lower sugar content of its bars.

To go beyond having plastic-free packaging, Prodigy has worked in partnership with rePurpose Global to fund the removal of 10 ocean-bound single-use plastic wrappers from the environment for every single Prodigy bar sold. Effectively, Prodigy removes more plastic than it produces and is certified ‘plastic-negative’ by rePurpose Global.

Sameer Vaswani, Founder of Prodigy, says: “We’re on a mission to inspire positive change in society and the food industry as a whole, further underlined by these bold new sustainability commitments. Our overall aim is to deliver sweet snacks that not only taste amazing but benefit the environment, have a significantly healthier nutrition profile, and are accessible to all. This is chocolate that inspires change and we’re thrilled that our new packaging with embedded carbon-neutral label brings all our credentials and brand values to life.”
